13 June 2023: In Fizi territory, South Kivu province, the head of HEKS EPER NGO was kidnapped by unidentified armed men while he was driving on a motorbike towards Lusenda. His travel companion was also kidnapped and tortured but released a few hours later. The perpetrators demanded $20,000 dollars to release the NGO head and claimed to have kidnapped the staff member following a disagreement with a road renovation project in the area. 10 March 2022: In Katalukuli village, Fizi territory, South Kivu province, Maï-Maï militia members raided a health centre and kidnapped four male nurses and a driver, taking them to the Kakungu forest. One of the nurses and the driver managed to escape their kidnappers. Nurses in the Fizi health zone went on strike to demand the release of their kidnapped colleagues, impacting health services in the area. All were released by 26 March.
