2024 SHCC Chapter

27 May 2025: In Touara locality, Machina commune and cercle, Segou region, a 30-year-old health worker from the Touara Community Health Centre (CSCOM), who was in charge of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), was kidnapped and killed by unidentified armed men while he was in his rice fields. Sources: Malijet and Studio Tamani. 25 August 2024: In Inkharabane Refugee Camp, Tinzaouaten commune, Abeibara cercle, Kidal region, 26 people were killed by two drone strikes by the FAMa which first struck a pharmacy then a crowded area. Source: Wamaps News. Return to Mali home page.

06 December 2022: In Kita village, Tenenkou commune, Mopti region, a health worker and two other civilians were injured and five civilians from the Tuareg and Fulani communities were killed in air-ground operations using helicopters reportedly by Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and Wagner forces during the weekly market day. 21 November 2022: In Kadji locality, Gounzoureye commune, Gao cercle and region, motorcycle-borne Islamist militants attacked the Kadji IDP camp, leaving 11 persons dead, and another injured. Around 07 September 2022: In Talataye village, Gao region, a health centre, houses, the market, shops, water points, granaries, fuel depots, and the Wi-Fi network were destroyed and burned by IS Sahel militants in an attack on civilians from Dawsahak, Tuareg, Djerma, and Songhai communities.  At least thirty civilians were killed. 26 August 2022: In Lere town, Tombouctou region, the offices of an INGO were broken into by an unidentified armed group. Three motorcycles, computers, and other items were taken. One motorcycle was later found. Source: ACLED1

According to the SHCC, at least 29 health workers were kidnapped in 2021. The majority of victims were employed by health INGOs and in most cases were abducted in groups of up to three or four people. Kidnappings  commonly took place while staff were travelling to provide health care to remote areas of the country; often the vehicles they were in were seized by their abductors.
